"Peak Streetcar" - A Retrospective - 2
A respected colleague coined the phrase "peak streetcar" to describe the maximum extent of the electric railway industry in a given country. Here in the U.S., the era of "peak streetcar" occurred about the year 1917.
Before beginning a series of comparisons with today, we shall present a few more "derived statistics:"
Railway Operating Receipts (Revenue) per "boarding": $0.045, equivalent to about $0.80 today.
As described previously, the annual passenger or "boarding" statistic is inclusive of all passengers carried, i.e. "revenue," "transfer" and "free." "Free" passengers were, typically, company employees but not always: in some cities, police officers and mail carriers were permitted to travel without payment of fares.
Railway Operating Receipts (Revenue) per passenger-kilometer (passenger-mile): $0.15 ($0.20), equivalent to about $0.25 ($0.40) today.
We estimated the average distance traveled per boarding  - 3 km (2 mi) - using the technique described by D. J. Reynolds.
(See: Reynolds, D. J. 1971. Research Monograph No. 3: The Urban Transport Problem in Canada, 1970-2000. (Prepared for the Honourable R. K. Andras, Minister Responsible for Housing, Government of Canada.) Ottawa.)
We explain how to use this technique in Traffic Density: What Does That Mean? (publictransit.us Special Report No. 7.2), scroll down to 2.) Calculation.

Railway Operating Receipts (Revenue) per revenue passenger car-kilometer (car-mile): $0.19 ($0.31), equivalent to about $3.30 ($5.30) today.
Railway Operating Receipts (Revenue) per revenue passenger car-hour: $3.27, equivalent to about $55 today.
Railway Operating Expenditures (Expenses) per "boarding": $0.029, equivalent to about $0.50 today.
Railway Operating Expenditures (Expenses) per passenger-kilometer (passenger-mile): $0.010 ($0.015), equivalent to about $0.15 ($0.25) today.

Railway Operating Expenditures (Expenses) per revenue passenger car-kilometer (car-mile): $0.125 ($0.202), equivalent to about $2.10 ($3.40) today.
Railway Operating Expenditures (Expenses) per revenue passenger car-hour: $2.12, equivalent to about $35 today.
Operating income per "boarding": $0.015, equivalent to about $0.25 today.
Operating income per passenger-kilometer (passenger-mile): $0.005 ($0.007), equivalent to about $0.08 ($0.12) today.

Operating income per revenue passenger car-kilometer (car-mile): $0.063 ($0.101), equivalent to about $1.10 ($1.70) today.
Operating income per revenue passenger car-hours: $1.06, equivalent to about $18.00
Operating income is equal to railway operating receipts (revenue), plus net receipts (revenue) from auxiliary operations, less operating expenditures (expenses) and taxes.
Annual "boardings" per revenue passenger car-hours: 72.9.
