Philadelphia - General: Most streets and roads in the business center ("Center City") and adjacent residential areas are not sufficiently wide to permit construction of double track. For this reason, many tramway services operated on paired tracks built in parallel streets. The (previous) extent of this practice introduces considerable uncertainty into "system length" statistics.
The authors believe that most "system length" statistics presented in the table above, pre-1960, are analogous to "street length" occupied by tramway tracks. "System length" statistics post-1960 account for paired tracks in parallel streets as "double track."
However, the "system length" statistic for 1910 is, explicitly, "first main track." This appears compatible with post-1960 statistics as described above.
The authors estimate the "excess" system length associated with the 1907 and 1950 statistics at approximately 65 km / 40 mi.
Operator titles: Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company (PRT Co, to 1940), Philadelphia Transportation Company (PTC, 1940-1968), Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) City Transit Division (from 1968).
1907, 1910: PRT Co operated suburban extensions north to Jenkintown / Glenside – Willow Grove – Hatboro / Doylestown.
1910: In addition to the above, PRT Co operated suburban extensions to Media and Chester.

1910: Route names are as presented in source document (with additional details to provide clarity). Many route changes took place after 1910. Some of these followed a 1911 management change. Others accompanied metro system expansion.
(The "Frankford Elevated" to northeast Philadelphia was opened on 1922 November 5. The "Broad Street Subway" was opened to North Philadelphia on 1928 September 1, and to South Philadephia on 1938 September 18.)
The "Market Street Subway-Elevated" had opened in stages between Center City Philadelphia and 69th Street Terminal, 1907 March 4 - 1908 October 4. "Subway-surface" tramway ("trolley") services had used a four-track segment of the underground line from 1905 December 18.
No service operated 1910 February 19 - 1910 April 2 because of work stoppage; traffic density statistics scaled up to annual rates.

52nd St/Center City: "52nd Street/Center City (City Branch) Corridor," in planning. To extend westward from Convention Center, one-way loop in business center ("Center City") streets, to goods (freight) railway alignment in cutting and tunnel, known as the “City Branch” and owned currently by CSX Transportation. The project includes a new underground station to serve the Philadelphia Art Museum. The line is planned to continue northwestward to Girard Avenue, west along the existing tramway to Parkside Avenue, then south on 52nd Street to a planned new regional rail station. The line would be built as light rail transit (LRT), using either rehabilitated PCC-type cars or new stock, or as bus rapid transit (BRT) using motorbuses or trolleybuses. Selection of the "Locally Preferred Alternative" was anticipated by late 2006.
UPDATE: The alternatives analysis, completed at 2006 August, concluded that none of the proposed alternatives would carry sufficient passenger traffic to justify the investment. The project was cancelled thereafter.
